Volvo Expands its In-Car Delivery Service through Partnership with Urb-it

Volvo has expanded its In-Car Delivery Service by partnering with a local start-up in Stockholm called urb-it. While the service is currently only available in Stockholm City, there are plans to expand to other European cities throughout the year, with an anticipated expansion to approximately 200 cities worldwide by 2025, so the future of delivery services may well be on our doorstep (or just outside our car doors, as it were). Check out the video below for further information.

Our cars have long since ceased to be just a means of travel; they’re now nearly better connected than our homes, with most vehicles offering some kind of smartphone integration platform. Volvo has imagined another use for your vehicle, even when you’re not using it: delivery receptacle. We all know that frustrating feeling of arriving home to see that the package we expected to be awaiting us is instead a slip of paper saying, “Sorry we missed you…!” With Volvo In-Car delivery, missing packages can become a thing of the past.

The program is relatively simple, but ingenious nonetheless. Customers shop online at a store affiliated with urb-it, then selects urb-it delivery at checkout. A one-time code will be sent to a urb-it courier (urber), who will use that code to pick up your purchase from the store. Within two hours, the urber will deliver your items right to your Volvo vehicle. By issuing a one-time digital key to the urber, Volvo ensures that your packages remain safe and secure, ready for you when you return.

“We understand the value of the In-car Delivery service we have developed. We’ve all had phone calls at work from delivery people trying to deliver packages to our homes that need to be signed for when there is no one home. With our In-car Delivery service we effectively turn your car into a delivery location and assign a one-time digital key to the delivery person, effectively eliminating delivery failure.” –Björn Annwall, Senior Vice President Marketing Sales and Service at Volvo Car Group

We very well could be seeing a fundamental shift in how deliveries and online shopping occur, but for now we’ll have to watch from afar until this program reaches us here at Don Beyer Volvo of Winchester, but that does give you some time to get the new Volvo of your dreams before it becomes more than a car.
